Begin Where You Are

Twenty-four minutes into this interview recorded between New Brunswick and Nigeria (at 6:45 AM this morning!), I was reminded of one of the most basic truths I’ve ever learned (and that still holds value):

You begin where you are.

You see, your journey starts not where you wish you were or when everything’s lined up perfectly. It especially doesn’t start when the tech works (his internet dropped halfway through, and we laughed). Instead, you begin in the middle of whatever life looks like. You just start.

That idea reappeared recently while reading Alan Watts, and it echoed something I’ve held as a fundamental truth for years:

Become what you are.

It sounds simple, almost too easy. But the work of becoming isn’t about inventing yourself from scratch. It’s about stripping back everything that told you not to trust your own timing, your voice, or your strange and beautiful way of seeing the world.

Today’s podcast wasn’t flashy or high-production. It was a quiet, curious host from Nigeria who reached out and said, “I’d like to hear what shaped you.”

And that? That felt like enough.

Let me tell you: for all the strategy and planning and showbiz polish we talk about in branding and business… the most meaningful conversations don’t care about polish. They care about presence. And that’s what truly matters.

So this is me, 24 minutes in, mid-conversation, no script, no perfect setup. Just showing up on a podcast called Relatable Wisdom and trusting that maybe something I’ve lived through could serve someone else across the world.
